Short answer

A per-user cost limit for an AI feature is not enforced simply by producing a usage report at month-end. Budget checks when accepting requests, limits during processing and actual consumption records on completion are required. Delayed, cancelled and retried calls must also be included in the cost model.

Define the usage unit first

Daily requests per user, budget per company and resources per operation are different controls. Request count alone may be insufficient for long-document processing. Assess model input, generated output and additional tool charges together. Current provider prices should be configuration inputs; do not embed an immutable price table in application code.

Free trials and paid accounts can have different limits. Show remaining allowances and when limits are reassessed clearly. When budget is exceeded, provide a controlled message rather than an ambiguous error. In addition to request identity, an authorised user or tenant context is needed to assign usage correctly.

Budget races between concurrent requests

Two requests seeing sufficient budget simultaneously can cause overspending. Reserve resources for accepted work or apply the organisation’s chosen atomic limit mechanism. Reconcile reservations with actual consumption after completion. If provider usage information is delayed, make the difference visible; do not record it as zero cost.

Retries must also depend on budget. Unlimited retries after an error can turn an outage into a cost problem. Limit request counts, iterations and permitted actions for tool-calling agents. OWASP’s LLM risk framework addresses security; organisational financial limits and operating rules must be applied separately.

Test behaviour, not price

Test the system before the budget is exhausted, when it is exhausted and when multiple calls arrive simultaneously. Try cancellation, timeouts and provider failures. Check that usage records and application messages are consistent. Manage the test environment with a separate budget; simulated test consumption must not be mixed into real customer invoices. The goal is controllable cost, not a claim of consistently low prices.

Implementation checklist

  • Is the limit per user, tenant or operation?
  • Can provider prices be updated?
  • Is budget protected during concurrent acceptance?
  • Are retries and agent loops bounded?
  • Is test consumption separate from customer usage?

Frequently asked questions

Is limiting request count sufficient?

Not for every workload. Long inputs, long outputs and tools can consume additional resources.

Can a fixed feature cost be stated?

Do not claim a fixed cost without specifying provider, usage profile and measurement period.

Scope and limitations

This is not a price list or a cost guarantee. Verify the selected provider’s current contract, pricing and usage measurement during the project.
