API-First Development: Decoupling the Backend and Making Applications Multichannel

The API-first approach is presented here as a key step in moving from monolithic to microservice-based systems. Websites, mobile apps, IoT devices and chatbots share data through a common API.

What is API-first?

The API-first model plans the API at the start of development: API before interface. Applications then integrate through the same data source.

  • Central data model: Web, mobile and IoT channels fetch data through one API.
  • Less duplicated work: Avoid developing a separate backend for each platform.
  • Independent development: Frontend teams can start with API mocks before the backend is complete.

“API-first builds an ecosystem, not just an application.”

From monoliths to microservices

Monolithic architectures keep functions in one codebase. In the migration described here, API-first supports splitting that structure into independently managed microservices.

MaintenanceDifficult, riskyModules that can be updated independently

Multichannel (Omnichannel) Application Architecture

A major API-first advantage is multichannel communication : one backend can serve a website, mobile app, smartwatch, kiosk or IoT device.

  • Mobile integration: Native apps fetch data from REST/GraphQL APIs.
  • IoT connectivity: Sensors, machines and devices are connected to the central system via the API.
  • Chatbot / Voice App: NLP-based assistants provide live data using the API.
  • Headless CMS: Distribute managed content across channels through the API.

“One data source, many channels: an architecture for modern brands.”

Technology Stack: REST, GraphQL, gRPC

API-first offers several technology choices, each with different trade-offs in scale, speed and complexity.

  • REST: Classic HTTP-based API structure - simple, reliable.
  • GraphQL: The flexibility to perform a full query of the data needed.
  • gRPC: High performance, binary protocol-based API (ideal for IoT and microservices in particular).
B10 implementation: We use Next.js + NestJS + GraphQL in API-first systems to optimise performance and security.

API security: authentication and rate limiting

Security in API-first systems starts with access control. All data flow must pass through the authentication layer.

  • JWT & OAuth 2.0: Modern standards for authentication and authorisation.
  • Rate limiting: Limit API calls, for example to 1,000 requests per hour.
  • Versioning: Manage API changes by version, for example /v1/users, /v2/users.
Example: B10 enterprise projects combine Cloudflare Access and JWT for API security. The API gateway also uses rate limits and log analytics to detect misuse.

API-Driven Ecosystem After 2025

APIs connect not just software but brand ecosystems. Web, mobile, CRM, ERP and IoT communicate through the same backbone, supporting sustainable digital transformation.

  • Creating corporate API catalogs
  • Automatic production of API documentation (Swagger / Postman)
  • Monitor and scale API usage analytics
  • Switching to OpenAPI 3.1 standards

Move your application to API-first architecture.
The B10 Digital Agency restructures your backend systems with an API-first approach, making web, mobile and IoT integrations manageable from a single center.
