Blockchain technology is becoming a new standard for financial transactions and for product authentication and traceability. Each product’s journey from production to consumption is tracked through NFT-like digital identities. What does this system mean for brands and consumers?

1. Why Has Product Identity Moved to Blockchain?
Traditional supply chains lack transparency and trust because data is held in multiple systems. Blockchain-based product identity provides individual product traceability by recording every production, shipment and sale step immutably.
- Product information is recorded on the blockchain (timestamp, batch, manufacturer, certificate, etc.)
- A digital identity (NFT-like token) is created for each product
- Data cannot be changed; it can only be updated by adding a new block
“Blockchain allows trust in the data itself, rather than the manufacturer’s word.”
2. What Is an NFT-Based Product Identity?
Each product acquires a unique digital identity through a non-fungible token (NFT) structure. This token contains the product’s identity, origin, production date and even sustainability certificates.
- Uniqueness: Each product’s identity is represented by a single token.
- Verification: Consumers can verify on-chain records using QR or NFC.
- Transparency: All transactions are visible on a public blockchain.
3. Use Cases
| Sector | Application | Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Luxury Fashion | NFT certification for products such as bags, watches and shoes | Counterfeit detection and preservation of resale value |
| Food & Drink | Tracking origin, suppliers and shelf life | Food safety and transparency |
| Health & Cosmetics | Formula, production batch and test results | Consumer confidence and quality control |
| Art & Collection | Identifying digital works and physical artworks | Origin guarantee |
4. Technical Structure: NFT ≠ Cryptocurrency
A product NFT is an identity document rather than a financial asset. Each token only shows the product’s journey through its “asset chain”. These records may be kept on the brand’s private chain or a public chain.
- Private chain (e.g. Hyperledger) → Corporate privacy
- Public chain (e.g. Polygon, Ethereum) → Transparent consumer verification
- Hybrid chain → Two-layer security and cost balance
“Every product can have a verifiable story from producer to consumer.”
5. Blockchain + IoT + AI Integration
The next generation of product traceability is strengthened by blockchain and by IoT sensors and artificial intelligence used in monitoring systems.
- IoT sensors: tracking temperature, location and transport conditions
- AI anomaly detection: identifying fake identities or manipulation
- Smart contracts: automatic alerts or records under specified conditions
6. Regulations and the Future
The EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) and blockchain-focused supply chain regulations in Türkiye are preparing to make blockchain mandatory for product traceability.
- EU DPP → Digital product identity required from 2027
- KVKK & GDPR compliant data retention protocols
- Mandatory smart packaging and QR-based identification
7. After 2025: The Era of Digital Twins and Product Passports
Each product will be represented by a “Digital Twin”, a digital counterpart of its physical existence. This structure will fully digitise brands’ quality, sustainability and warranty processes.
- Real-time product history lookup
- Automatic warranty and maintenance records
- Verification of origin in second-hand markets
