Short answer

Updating the search index alone is insufficient when document permissions change in a RAG system. Verify access against the current user identity before producing an answer; apply the same authorisation boundary to caches, source previews and exports. Returning an old cached answer to a user whose access was revoked is also a data leak.

The search filter is not the final security boundary

Group or user access can be associated with document chunks when indexing them. That copied information may be outdated. After retrieval selects a document, but before its content reaches the model, check access in the source system. Prefer excluding documents when access is unknown or cannot be verified.

Access to a document and display of a summary derived from it belong to the same permission chain. Without user-specific or appropriate authorisation-context cache separation, a summary created by an authorised user can reach someone else. Protecting the document link but not the answer text is incomplete.

Propagating permission changes to every copy

Define explicit events for document deletion, group-membership changes and sharing revocation. Updates to indexes, answer caches and source-preview copies must be traceable tasks. Show unfinished tasks in reports. The requirements document must clearly specify whether the system may return content using old permission information when the source system is temporarily unreachable.

An instruction telling the model not to share confidential documents does not replace access control. Instructions inside an external document must not expand permissions either. OWASP’s LLM risk approach is a useful starting point; prepare application-specific negative tests separately. Model selection does not change where the security boundary must be enforced.

Three users for acceptance testing

Ask the same question as a user with access, one without access and one whose access was later revoked. Repeat after an authorised answer has populated the cache. Check source previews and download links too. Passing means not only disappearance of a search result, but also prevention of unauthorised access to the derived answer.

Implementation checklist

  • Is access verified before content reaches the model?
  • Is the answer cache separated by authorisation context?
  • Are deletion and access-revocation task states visible?
  • Do previews and downloads apply the same check?
  • Is there a negative test with a user whose access was revoked?

Frequently asked questions

Can a prompt restrict data access?

A prompt is a supplementary behaviour rule; it does not replace server-side access control.

Is waiting for an index update enough after permissions change?

Manage the delay window separately. This is why current authorisation must be checked before answer generation.

Scope and limitations

Adapt the architecture to the source system’s access model and data classification. This list is not a security certificate or a guarantee against every threat.
