Short answer

Do not rank lookalike domains by spelling similarity alone. Assess the displayed name, actual domain, active page content, brand claims and requested consumer action together. A Unicode-character difference is a review signal; it does not automatically establish malicious intent or legal infringement.

Record both the displayed address and the technical name

Keep the characters users see and the technical domain representation in the same incident record. Include observation source and time. Do not confuse a URL path, query or subdomain with the root domain. Domain registration and serving an active website are also different states; reporting a payment-page risk for an empty domain is inaccurate.

Alongside name similarity, examine what accessible content claims. A page claiming to be the official brand store and requesting a transaction differs from an empty page containing a similar word. Preserve safe-access boundaries: do not enter user information, download files or make test payments on suspicious pages.

An organisation-specific risk queue

Create a reference list of official domains and authorised dealer sites. Compare each signal against it, including old campaign sites and regional pages. Suggested queue fields are similarity type, active content, brand claim, requested action, reviewer and next step. Retain uncertainty as a separate state.

UDRP is not an automatic process that produces the same outcome for every domain dispute. WIPO’s guide explains its scope and assessment criteria. A technical incident summary supports the legal team’s review; similarity to a brand name alone does not justify transfer or cancellation. The appropriate procedure must be determined separately under the rules applicable to the domain.

How is alert quality measured?

Initially test rules against verified official sites, legitimate dealers and examples requiring review. Count false alarms and missed examples separately. The number of domains found alone is not a success measure. Acceptance criteria must also address timely review and rule updates when the official list changes.

Implementation checklist

  • Are the displayed and technical domain names recorded?
  • Are active content and registration status distinguished?
  • Was the authorised-dealer list checked?
  • Is the requested user action stated?
  • Is the context file for legal review ready?

Frequently asked questions

Can a lookalike domain always be shut down?

No. Rights, usage context, applicable policy and application requirements must be evaluated.

Must data be entered on a suspicious site?

Not for this initial review; do not enter personal or payment data.

Scope and limitations

This article is a technical prioritisation framework, not a legal opinion, a domain-transfer guarantee or a promise of an application outcome.
