Trust in supply chains relies not only on physical documents and declarations, but also on digital certificates and origin verification systems. Monitoring solutions aligned with ISO 22383 and GS1 document the product journey from production to consumer, reducing counterfeit and reputation risks.

1. Digital Certificate Concept

According to ISO 22383, digital certificates are cryptographic documents that electronically verify physical products’ origin, production date and distribution chain. These documents:

  • are associated with each product’s unique identifier such as a GS1 code or UUID;
  • can be updated at manufacturing, distribution, logistics and retail stages;
  • are stored immutably in a blockchain or central database.

“Every product has a story; digital certificates make it verifiable.”

2. Compliance with GS1 Standards

GS1 is a globally accepted standard for product identification and traceability. By integrating digital certificate systems with GS1 data structures:

  • EAN/UPC barcodes, EPCIS events and batch numbers enter the digital origin chain.
  • Each "event" (production, shipping, distribution) is verified by a digital signature,
  • Consumer can access product history via QR code.

3. How automated origin verification works

QR codes, NFC tags and digital tokens enable instant verification queries. The process typically follows these steps:

  1. The consumer scans the code on the product.
  2. The system checks the corresponding record in the blockchain or certificate database.
  3. If the data matches, the product is reported as original; otherwise, a warning is generated.
Technical infrastructure: GS1 EPCIS and blockchain API integration can connect to the manufacturer’s ERP for real-time data transfer.

4. Blockchain-supported traceability

  • Each certificate is signed with SHA-256 or similar hash algorithm.
  • A timestamp record is created on the blockchain.
  • The product history can be read by anyone, but only updated by authorised parties.

This provides non-repudiation and full transparency.

“Blockchain provides not only security but also a layer of trust for brand reputation.”

5. Advantages of Digital Certificates

  • 🌐 Global verification: Products can be checked through the same system wherever they are sold.
  • 🔒 Counterfeit prevention: Origin verification fails for copied products.
  • 📦 Supply chain efficiency: Instant verification replaces manual document checks.
  • 📊 Data analytics: QR scan data supports analysis of market activity and counterfeiting concentration.

6. ISO 22383-compliant digital certificate example

Security tip: Certificates should combine more than a hash: use timestamp + issuer signature + product token together as three components.

7. Automated alerts and monitoring

Digital origin-chain systems can report suspicious product flows or missing data matches as automated alerts:

  • Anomaly detection: Raises an alert when the same product ID appears with a different production date.
  • Geofencing: An unexpected verification region, such as an unauthorised sales location, creates a log entry.
  • Audit trail: The full history of changes and verifications can be audited.

"The origin chain provides customer confidence, not just supply security."
